Frontenacs 50th
Posted: March 2nd, 2013 @ 11:19am
Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Saturday, March 2, 1963
The Frontenacs increased their league lead to four points with a 5-4 win over second-place Hull-Ottawa Saturday night at the Community Centre. Billy Knibbs, the 21-year-old centre who played last year for the Niagara Falls Flyers, had the first two-goal game of his young pro career to lead Kingston.
The home team never trailed but three times Hull-Ottawa came back to tie the score. Jeannot Gilbert scored the winning goal midway through the third period, taking a pass from Red Ouellette off his skate and firing the puck past Canadiens goaltender Cesare Maniago.
Don Blackburn and Dick Cherry scored Kingston's other goals. Keith McCreary and Brian Smith each scored their 20th goal of the season for Hull-Ottawa, while Claude Larose and Red Berenson shared the others.
The teams will engage in a rematch tomorrow in Hull. Related Articles:
