Queen's hockey women lose at Toronto; fall to fourth place

Two goals by Alie Brind'Amour-McClure less than three minutes apart in the middle of the third period lifted the Toronto Blues to a 2-1 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels in an Ontario University Athletics women's hockey game Sunday afternoon in Toronto.
The victory, the seventh in the last eight games for the Blues, allowed Toronto, 18-5-1, to vault past Queen's into third place in the final league standings. The No. 5-ranked Gaels, who ended the weekend 1-1 having defeated Ryerson 4-2 Saturday, lost for the third time in their last five games.
As a result, they'll face the Windsor Lancers in the first round of playoffs for the second year in a row. Dates for the best-of-three quarter-final series are to be announced. In the regular year, the Gaels lost 6-3 at Windsor but they beat the Lancers 3-2 at home.
Alisha Sealey scored the only goal of the first period Sunday for Queen's, 16-4-4, and the teams battled through a scoreless second period in which the visitors outshot Toronto 13-10. The Gaels could not score the equalizer despite pulling goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher in the final minute for a sixth skater.
Dodd-Moher made 28 saves as the visitors outshot the Blues 33-30.
Morgan McHaffie of Queen's was held off the scoresheet Sunday and failed in her bid to break the league career scoring record. She ended her fifth intercollegiate season with 153 points lifetime, just two less than Elizabeth Chiasson of Queen's collected in a four-year career that ended in 2005.
McHaffie finished her season with 11 goals and 31 points in 24 games. She had points in five consecutive games going into Sunday's contest, including a pair of assists Saturday against Ryerson.
The Rams opened scoring with a goal after just 29 seconds of play but Shawna Griffin scored her 13th goal of the year less than three minutes later to tie the game. The teams traded goals before the period ended and played through a scoreless second period before Clare McKellar scored in the fourth minute of the third period to give the Gaels a 3-2 lead.
Sealey, in the first period, and Megan Farrell, in the final minute into an empty net, scored the other goals for Queen's, which outshot Ryerson 40-13. Dodd-Moher got the goaltending victory, her 50th lifetime for the Gaels.
