Paladins thumped by Carleton

On old nemesis visited the Royal Military College Paladins Wednesday.
The Paladins surrendered a goal in the final minute of the first period and a clearly deflated team came out for the second period of their Ontario University Athletics hockey game. The Carleton Ravens seized the opportunity to score four goals in the first 12 minutes of the period - the last three of them in a span of less than four minutes - on their way to a 9-1 win at the Constantine Arena.
It was the 11th time this year - not counting empty-net goals - that RMC was scored upon in the final minute of a period. This one couldn't have come at a worse time.
After holding their own for the first half of the opening period, the Paladins fell behind 2-0 but they quickly answered the second Carleton goal when Kyle Phillips scored on the rebound of a Mathieu Lavallee shot off the end boards at 17:32.
The Ravens, the No.6-ranked team in Canada, scored on a power play with just 22 seconds left in the period, however, on a low shot through a screen in front of RMC goaltender Evan Deviller.
Nine different players scored for Carleton, which stretched its current winning streak to 12 games, the second-longest this year in Canada. The Ravens, who have not lost in 2014, sufferered their last defeat Nov. 30, 6-2 at Waterloo.
Calgary opened its Canada West schedule with 13 straight wins. Alberta had a 12-game winning streak to start its season.
The victory lifted Carleton, 21-5-1, into first place in the East division. With 43 points the Ravens are one point ahead of McGill and two points ahead of Trois-Rivieres. Carleton and McGill each have one game left in their respective regular schedules, while Trois-Rivieres has two.
Defenceman Jake Cardwell had a goal and three assists for Carleton, while Mitch Porowski had four assists. Former Kingston Frontenac Corey Durocher had a goal and an assist.
Deviller faced 53 shots in the RMC goal, and though he gave up nine goals he made as many sparkling saves as the Ravens often had their way with a home team that at times appeared to be stuck in its tracks.
RMC, outshot 53-22, took all five minor penalties assessed in the game, and Carleton made the Paladins pay, with three power-play goals.
The Paladins, 3-21-3, will close their regular schedule Friday night at home against Concordia. The Queen's Golden Gaels, locked into fourth place and a first-round playoff date with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, will conclude their regular season Friday night at Trois-Rivieres.
