Gaels win women's hockey playoff opener
Posted: February 13th, 2014 @ 11:14pm
Queen's Golden Gaels withstood a late rally to defeat the Windsor Lancers 2-1 in the opening game of their Ontario University Athletics women's hockey playoff series Thursday night in Windsor.
The best-of-three quarter-final will resume Saturday night at the Memorial Centre.
After a scoreless first period, Kyla Crouse scored the game's first goal for Queen's on a power play midway through the second period. Clare McKellar, who took that shot that led to that goal, set Courtenay Jacklin up in the fourth minute of the third period for a goal that give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Adalena Tridico spoiled goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher's shutout bid with just less than four minutes left in the third period but despite pulling their goaltender for a sixth skater, the Lancers couldn't pull even.
Queen's outshot Windsor 34-29.
The No. 9-ranked Gaels, defending OUA champions who have won the conference title two of the last three years, split the season series with the Lancers, losing 6-3 at Windsor and winning 3-2 at home. Last year the teams also met in the first round, with Queen's coming back to win the series after spotting Windsor an opening-game victory.
Saturday's game will commence at 7:30 p.m. If a third game is needed to decide the series, it will be played Sunday, also at 7:30. Related Articles:
