Laurier forces Queen's to deciding game in women's hockey final

Amanda Smith made 39 saves, 16 of them in the third period, as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks blanked the Queen's Golden Gaels 2-0 in an Ontario University Athletics women's hockey playoff game Friday afternoon at the Memorial Centre.
The victory forces a third and deciding game in the best-of-three final series. It will be played Sunday night in Waterloo.
It was the third shutout of the season for Smith, whose play enabled the No. 3-ranked Hawks to avoid elimination. The rookie from Burlington, 4-1 in six playoff games, lowered her goals-against average in the post-season to 1.38.
For the Gaels, the loss extended a strange circumstance, whereby the visiting team has won the last five playoff games. In post-season play, Queen's is 4-0 on the road, but just 1-2 at home.
A goal by Devon Skeats midway through the second period gave Laurier all the offence it would need. It was her fifth goal of the playoffs, and her 20th career post-season goal.
Rookie Jessica Prevette scored the Hawks' other goal with just 78 seconds left in regulation time, cashing the rebound of a shot by Kingston's Emily Kekewich.
Queen's outshot Laurier 39-27, in a game that had just three minor penalties called. Mel Dodd-Moher, who has been brilliant in goal for the Gaels throughout the playoffs, took the loss.
Defending league champion Queen's, the eighth-ranked team in Canada, has won two of the last three OUA championships. Laurier, which last won the title in 2012, has won nine of the last 12 conference crowns.
The winner of Sunday's game qualifies for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship, March 13-16 in Fredericton.
