Holy Cross sweeps KASSAA boys, girls hockey titles

Posted: March 1st, 2014 @ 1:16am

Holy Cross Crusaders completed an undefeated Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association boys hockey season Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win over the La Salle Black Knights in the championship game at the Invista Centre.

The Crusaders will advance to their fourth consecutive Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship game at the Invista Centre Tuesday, 1 p.m., against Thousand Islands of Brockville.

Friday's game was scoreless until the eighth minute of the third period, when Mack Hancock tipped Jag Masters' shot from the point past La Salle goaltender Kenton Carmody.

The teams traded scoring chances to the end of the game, and with 2:25 to play La Salle went on the power play, but instead Colin Tonge stripped a La Salle player of the puck and slid it into the empty net to secure the win.

Quinn Cota posted the shutout for the Crusaders, their fourth in 11 league and playoff games this year.

In the girls final, Holy Cross completed an undefeated season of its own with a 3-1 win over the Napanee Golden Hawks. In fashioning a 10-0 record in KASSAA play, the Crusaders allowed just five goals and recorded six shutouts.
