Holy Cross, La Salle unbeaten at OFSAA basketball

The second quarter was magical for the Holy Cross Crusaders on the opening day of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations boys AAA basketball tournament in Windsor.
Monday morning, the fifth-seeded Crusaders trailed Huntsville by two points after the first quarter, but they proceeded to outscore the 15th seed 10-1 in the second en route to a 51-27 victory.
Brent Martindale led Holy Cross with 14 points, while Brody Maracle scored 11.
Facing St. Paul in the afternoon, Holy Cross led by six points after eight minutes, then took command by outscoring its opponent 15-2 in the second quarter on its way to securing a 57-32 decision.
The two victories put the Crusaders into a quarter-final contest Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock against the winner of Monday's late game between No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 7 Sacred Heart.

Jesse Graham scored 18 points Monday to lead the La Salle Black Knights to a 53-45 first-round victory over Eden of St. Catharines at the boys AA basketball tournament in Richmond Hill. The Knights built a 34-15 lead in the first half and it proved more than sufficient to withstand being outscored 30-19 in the final two quarters.
Bruce Burns scored 12 points for the 10th-seeded Knights, who will play the tournament's 14th seed, Ste-Famille of Mississauga, Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Ste-Famille also won Monday, scoring 24 points in the third quarter of an 80-68 win over Immaculata.

Back in Windsor, things did not go well for the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers at the girls AAA volleyball tournament. The Panthers dropped all three of their preliminary round matches and have been relegated to the consolation round.
Regi's fate appeared to hinge on the middle set of their second match, against Father Redmond of Etobicoke. Having lost their first match Monday morning against St. Charles, the Panthers won the first set against Redmond 25-21. The second set was a marathon and Redmond finally prevailed, 29-27, before winning the deciding set 15-12.
The Panthers, the tournament's eighth seed, went meekly in their final match, 2-0 to No. 3 Waterdown.
Regi will play Villanova in a consolation quarter-final Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock.

At the boys single-A basketball championship in North Bay, the ninth-seeded Rideau District Lions were defeated 49-27 by Timmins O'Gorman, the tournament's third-seeded team. Caleb Rice and Jozef Olesen scored eight points apiece for Rideau, which will play Ridley of St. Catharines Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock.
Ridley, the tournament's eighth seed, defeated Pretty River 65-37 in its opening game Monday.
