Gaels ousted from CIS women's basketball tourney

Queen's Golden Gaels are coming home from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's basketball championship tournament in Windsor after they dropped a 67-55 decision to the Alberta Pandas in a consolation semifinal Saturday afternoon.
It was the second loss of the tournament for the Gaels, who were the No. 6 seed. As they were in their tournament-opening 61-52 loss to Saskatchewan Friday, the Gaels were plagued by poor shooting Saturday, as they sank just 30.3 per cent of their attempts from the field.
In the tournament, Queen's was 38-for-138, a collective 27.5 per cent success rate.
In a game of streaks, a Queen's scored 17 straight points late in the first quarter to take a 20-7 lead, then a 16-2 Alberta run late in the second quarter sent the Pandas into the break with a 33-29 advantage.
Alberta slowly took over the game in the third quarter, when they outscored Queen's 20-10. The OUA East division champion Gaels never got closer than eight points in the rest of the way.
Alberta, the tournament's seventh-seeded team, took advantage of its opportunities from the free-throw line, draining 22 of 27 foul shots. It was the second game in a row where the Gaels got themselves in foul trouble, after Saskatchewan made 22 of 29 free throws in Queen's first-round loss.
The Gaels made 18 of 29 foul shots in the two games combined.
Liz Boag, who scored 27 points, was the only Gael in double figures. The other four Queen's starters collectively managed 20 points.
Andria Carlyon scored 20 points for Alberta, the Canada West bronze medalist that outrebounded Queen's 54-41. Maddie Rogers came off the bench to score 11 for the Pandas, who will face McGill in Sunday's consolation match.
