Regi, Holy Cross set stage for first-place soccer showdown

Posted: May 2nd, 2014 @ 12:04am

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers and Holy Cross Crusaders set the stage for a first-place battle Monday with victories Thursday in Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls soccer play.

Both teams improved to 3-0, Regi with a 1-0 win over the Frontenac Falcons and Holy Cross with a 2-1 win over the Sydenham Golden Eagles.

For both Frontenac and Sydenham the loss was the first of the year, as both teams slipped half a game off the league-leading pace with 3-1 records.

Playing on the upper field at Queen's University's West Campus, Regi was held to fewer than six goals for the first time this season. Bridget Mulholland scored the only goal of the game off a first-half corner kick, and Kristina Nuvoloni posted the shutout, as the Panthers remain unscored upon this year.

An own goal helped to doom Sydenham at Caraco Field. Sydney DeLongi scored the other Holy Cross goal.

In the other senior girls games Thursday, Alex Wiley's goal helped the Kingston Blues move into the third-place logjam at 3-1 with a 1-0 win over the La Salle Black Knights and the Napanee Golden Hawks gained their first win of the season, 3-2 over the winless Bayridge Blazers.
