Three local athletes post record performances at Foley Invitational meet

Three Kingston-area athletes came home from the annual Michelle Foley Invitational high school track and field meet with their names newly inscribed in the meet's record book.
Midget-age athletes Marissa Battle of Kingston Collegiate and Clare Millard of Loyalist broke records at the day-long competition Saturday at Mary Ann Sills Park in Belleville.
Battle won the 100 metres in 12.50 seconds, 15 one-hundredths of a second better than the record established last year by Carolyne Simons of Belleville Centennial. Battle also won the 200 metres, in 26.87 seconds.
Millard broke the eight-year-old record in the 80-metre hurdles, setting it at 13.20 seconds. Shannon Walsh of Sydenham set the old mark, 13.31 seconds, in 2006.
Senior Sophia Skorenky of Marie-Rivier tied the record in senior girls 200 metres, 25.80 seconds, established last year by Taylor Cole of Frontenac. Skorenky was also second in the 400-metre hurdles.
Those winning performances were among 13 by Kingston Area Secondary School Athletic Associations competitors, heading into the county championships this week.
Besides Battle, the other local two-event winner was Maverick Snyder of Napanee, who emerged victorious from two of the most closely contested events of the meet. Competing in junior boys division, Snyder won the long jump with a best attempt of 5.66 metres (four centimetres ahead of Simon Guthrie of Perth) and he won triple jump at 12.42 metres (two centimetres better than Austin Allingham of Brockville Thousand Islands).
Heidi Scott of Kingston won junior girls 3,000 metres in 11 minutes 11.11 seconds and she was also second in the 800 metres. Ben Workman led KC's 1-2-3 finish in senior boys 800 metres, winning the event in 2 minutes 2.78 seconds.
KC's Noa Amson topped the field in open girls 1,500-metre steeplechase, stopping the clock in 5 minutes 43.59 seconds.
Isabelle From of Loyalist won senior girls 100 metres (12.70 seconds) and she followed that with a third-place performance in the 200 metres.
Kingston's other victories came in the throwing disciplines.
Sam Mace of Loyalist won junior boys discus, where his best attempt, 45.06 metres, was six and a half metres better than the rest of the field. Adam Burggraf of Bayridge won junior boys javelin (45.17 metres), and Ben Cross of Frontenac captured senior boys javelin (44.02 metres).
Though the Golden Eagles didn't win the event, Sydenham had enough 400-metre runners to field two teams in the 1,600-metre relay. They finished second and third, not only within two seconds of each other, but both were within three seconds of the winning team from Thousand Islands.
Four other athletes each had a pair of top-three performances, three of them middle-distance runners from KC: Graeme Workman (second in midget boys 800 metres, third in the 400 metres); Jacquelyn Quesnel (second in midget girls 800 metres, third in the 1,500 metres), and Amanda Shenfield (second in senior girls 1,500 metres, third in the 800 metres). Blaire Dunn of Frontenac tied for second in senior girls 100-metre hurdles she she placed third in triple jump.
The county championship meet will be held over two days, Thursday and Friday, with the discus and javelin contested at Richardson Stadium Thursday, and the remainder of the meet being held at Caraco Field, the intermediate hurdles and 1,500 metres on Thursday and the rest of the schedule on Friday.
