Strong finish gives Lancers final playoff berth

Loyalist Lancers claimed the final senior boys soccer playoff berth Monday afternoon, but it comes with a dubious prize.
With their 6-2 home-field win over the Granite Ridge Gryphons, the Lancers ended the regular Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association season with a 3-4 record, and relegated the Gryphons to ninth place at 2-5.
That earns the Lancers a date with the first-place Holy Cross Crusaders in Wednesday's quarter-finals. The Crusaders capped an undefeated season with a 1-1 tie with the Frontenac Falcons, who ended their season as the league's only other unbeaten team.
Taylor Pettingill scored four goals for Loyalist, which began the season with three straight defeats but ended it by winning three of its last four games. The Lancers got their other goals from Kenta Imamura and Louis Nottim, while Luke Asselstine and Travis Tyson replied for Granite Ridge.
Holy Cross had already clinched first place, and the tie was the only blemish on the Crusaders' 6-0-1 record. Frontenac finished second at 4-0-3, and the Falcons will play the Ernestown Eagles in the quarter-finals Wednesday.
Ernestown ended the year 4-3 after their 2-1 win Monday over the winless Marie-Rivier Dragons. Playing at the Queen's University West Campus field, the Eagles finished a game above .500 by winning for the third time in their last four games.
The Kingston Blues finished third, after their 1-0 win over the Napanee Golden Hawks. Like KC, the Sydenham Golden Eagles finished the year 4-1-2 but they were placed fourth, after battling the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers to a scoreless draw.
In Monday's other game, the Bayridge Blazers, 4-2-1, secured fifth place with a 5-0 win over the La Salle Black Knights.
Thomas Ronson's goal in the game's 63rd minute was the only one in the game at Napanee, where the Blues ended the season with their second consecutive shutout.
Logan Doyle was perfect in the Sydenham goal as the Golden Eagles engaged in a scoreless draw for the second time in their last three games. Matt Truelove was similarly flawless tending the Regi goal as the Panthers, 3-1-3 wound up in sixth place, despite losing just one game all season.
Christian Kutemeyer scored three times as Bayridge rebounded decisively from having lost two of its last three games. Playing at La Salle, the Blazers also got goals from Nate Clark and Bilal Mufti.
