Holy Cross slays upstart Dragons
Posted: May 15th, 2014 @ 12:43am
The magical run of the Marie-Rivier Dragons ended abruptly Wednesday afternoon, when they were defeated 6-0 by the Holy Cross Crusaders in a Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls soccer quarter-final match.
After winning their last three games on the field by a combined 20-1 score, the Dragons were blanked by a home team that got goals from six different players.
Nicole Lanzo, Alison Dodwell, Sabrina Goncalves, Marilyn Doherty, Kelsie Norman and Christina Papadakis shared the scoring for the Crusaders, who finished the regular year in second place, with a 6-1 record.
Elsewhere Wednesday, the Frontenac Falcons got second-half goals from Shannon Pincivero and Hana Gazdik in a 2-0 win over the La Salle Black Knights; Ella Bastien scored both goals as the Kingston Blues edged the Sydenham Golden Eagles 2-1, and the regular-season champion Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers remained undefeated with a 5-0 win over the Loyalist Lancers.
Bridget Mulholland, Zoe Tremblay and Kaitlyn Balfour, in the first half, and Natalie Blasko and Holly Kinstler, in the second, scored one goal apiece for Regi. Kristina Nuvoloni was flawless in goal.
In semifinal play Tuesday, Frontenac, 5-2-1, will visit Regi, 8-0, at 2:30 p.m., while Holy Cross, 7-1, will entertain KC, 6-2, at 5:15.
