Sophia Skorenky makes Marie-Rivier proud

Although the sun didn't shine on the second day of the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association track and field championships at Caraco Field, rising athletic talent found a way to poke through.
Sophia Skorenky of Marie-Rivier finished the annual county meet with a triple crown, winning the senior girls 400-metre hurdles Thursday and going on to win both the 100-metre and 200-metre dashes on Friday.
As pleased as she was with her own achievements, Skorenky said she was proud that the Marie-Rivier team, representing the association's smallest school, was more successful than in previous years, finishing eighth, between Frontenac and Loyalist.
Skorenky said she was surprised she fared so well against the individual competition, especially in the 400-metre hurdles, which she won in 1 minute 10.1 seconds.
"It was my first time doing it this year," she said. "I was a bit shocked that I won."
Skorenky said she valued her competition highly and was honoured to come out on top.
"I was scouting out all my competition, and a lot of them have gone to OFSAA," she said.
While her finishes were strong, the weather played a key role in the outcome of the events. Friday was a cool day marked by intermittent rain and wind, making it tough to compete effectively, particularly in the 200 metres.
"I found the wind affected me a lot more than the rain," Skorenky said. "Especially coming around the curve, you can feel it."
Nonetheless, Skorenky won the race in 28.5 seconds. Earlier Friday, she won the senior girls 100 metres, in 12.4 seconds.
Skorenky was one of eight athletes to win three events at the two-day meet.
Holy Cross senior Jonathan Besselink (800 metres, 1,500 metres and 2,000-metre steeplechase), his junior teammate Derian Leblanc (100, 200 and 400 metres) and Kingston's Cameron Linscott (junior boys 800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres) were the only boys to do so.
La Salle senior Heather Jaros (800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres), Sydenham junior Brittany Campbell (100 metres, 200 metres and long jump), Loyalist midget Clare Milland (sprint hurdles, intermediate hurdles and triple jump) and Regiopolis Notre Dame junior Branna MacDougall (800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres) were the others.
MacDougall was responsible for setting two of the meet's eight records, in the 1,500 metres (4 minutes 47.0 seconds) and the 3,000 metres (9:53.8). Both of the records MacDougall broke had been set by Clara Langley of Regi in 2010.
Maverick Snyder of Napanee, a two-event winner, set a new record in midget boys triple jump, 11.94 metres, set a decade ago by future OFSAA medalist David Jones of Ernestown.
In midget girls discus, Emily Fawcett of Frontenac set a new standard, 29.20 metres, 1.80 metres better than the record set last year by Regi's Hailey Wolfgram.
Jaros improved the record in senior girls 1,500 metres by almost three and a half seconds, to 2:14.9, and Regi's Emily Drouin established a new mark in the girls 1,500-metre steeplechase, 5 minutes 30.6 seconds.
There are new records in two events for intellectually impaired athletes, set by Sydenham's Dominique Hannah in the girls 100 metres, and by Regi's Danny Amaral in the boys 100 metres.
Sydenham was the most successful team at the end of the day with 647 points combined. Holy Cross was a close second at 625.5 points, with Kingston third at 478. Sydenham won both the boys and girls team championships, followed in each case by Holy Cross and KC.
The top four athletes in each event qualified for the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association championships, to be held May 22-23 in Brockville.
