Seventeen local athletes qualify for OFSAA

Seventeen Kingston-area athletes qualified for the 65th Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships Thursday on the first day of the East region qualifying meet in Ottawa.
Among them are four athletes from Kingston Collegiate and La Salle's Heather Jaros, who broke the senior girls record in the 1,500 metres.
Jaros' time, 4 minutes 26.18 seconds, was more than four seconds better than the mark established by Emma Galbraith of Franco Ouest in 2012, 4:30.34.
Athletes, who have had to qualify through two meets to get this far, must finish among the top four in their event to earn the right to advance to the provincial meet. The East region comprises teams in the central Ontario, eastern Ontario and National Capital associations, roughly from Peterborough to the Quebec border.
The other Kingston athletes who won their events Thursday night were junior Cameron Linscott of Kingston and Regiopolis Notre Dame junior Branna MacDougall, who won their respective divisions of the 1,500 metres.
Two other records fell on Day 1 of the two-day meet.
Alexandra Tierney of Ottawa Sacred Heart won senior girls 400-metre hurdles in 1 minute 0.95 seconds, taking about six-tenths of a second off the record set in 2004 by Bailey Lewis of North Dundas.
Brandon Deslauriers lost the junior boys discus record he set when he was at Napanee to the 59.64-metre throw by Tom Nedow of Thousand Islands in Brockville. Nedow's throw not only improved the mark Deslauriers set in 2010 by 1.12 metres, it was more than 12 metres beyond the next-best performance in Thursday's competition.
Competition concludes today. The OFSAA championships will be held June 5-7 in Mississauga.
