Kings beaten in Cornwall

CORNWALL - Cornwall Celtics extended their four-year-old home-floor winning streak over the Kingston Kings to nine games Thursday night with a 19-5 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League win over a depleted Kingston team Thursday night at the Benson Centre.
The Kings played without four players who had produced 37 of the team's 53 goals - 70 per cent of the team's offence through their first six games: Josh Smith, who was working; Zach Masterson and Cain Brown, who are injured, and Kaleb Bingley. Due to an injury to Austin Maracle and a late-game ejection, Kingston finished the night with just 13 runners.
The three-time division champion Celtics scored in the game's first minute but a power-play goal by Kingston's Bryce Drew - on his team's first shot of the game at 6:50 - tied the score, briefly. Before two more minutes had been played Cornwall scored four times on consecutive shots, chasing starting goaltender Nic McFarlane.
Without their offensive leaders, the Kings were unable to climb back into the game, trailing 7-2 after the first period and 13-3 after the second. The Celtics kept their foot on the gas, scoring five goals in the first nine and a half minutes of the third period, before Drew scored his second goal of the game.
Playing in the town where his uncle owns the junior hockey team - and in the same arena where the Cornwall Colts play in the winter - Kings rookie Nolan MacInnis scored his first junior goal and he finished the game with three assists for a career-best four-point night. J.P. DiFilippo and Logan Rose scored the other Kingston goals.
Brandon Perras scored five goals for the Celtics while Ryan Dewar scored three. Brandon Labelle, Steve Mellios and Tristen Thompson scored two goals apiece as nine different Cornwall players scored. Dewar and Liam Vipond each had five assists.
The Kings were 3-for-8 on the power play, but they allowed two shorthanded goals. Kingston was outshot 60-16 - meaning Cornwall scored more goals than Kingston had shots on net - including 18-4 in the third period, a period when the Kings had almost as many power-play opportunities (3) as they had shots on goal (4).
Now winless in their last five games, the Kings, 1-5-1, resume play at home Thursday when they will host the Gloucester Griffins.
