Regi's Hailey Wolfgram wins silver medal on Day 1 of OFSAA track and field

A bronze medalist a year ago as a midget, Hailey Wolfgram of Regiopolis Notre Dame won the silver medal in junior girls shot put Thursday on the opening day of the 65th Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships in Mississauga.
Hers was the only medal-winning performance by Kingston-area athletes on the first day of the three-day meet at St. Marcellinus Secondary School.
With a put of 10.74 metres on her third attempt, Wolfgram went into the final rounds in first place, but she was supplanted in the fourth round by Morgan Desjardins of Pain Court, whose 11.29-metre attempt would stand as the gold-medal throw.
Seeded third going into the competition, Wolfgram had her best throw, a season-best 10.83 metres, in the fifth round.
She had a remarkably consistent day, with five of her six attempts going 10.29 metres or beyond.
Cassandra Plute of Grimsby Blessed Trinity was third at 10.46 metres.
Two other Kingston Area athletes finished in the top eight of their field events - Ben Cross of Frontenac, who was fifth in senior boys javelin, and Kenya Costa-Dookhan of Holy Cross, who was seventh in senior girls long jump.
Five other local competitors qualified for Friday finals in Thursday heats, among them middle distance runners Branna MacDougall and Heather Jaros.
MacDougall, of Regiopolis Notre Dame, had the fastest qualifying time in junior girls 1,500 metres. In senior division, Jaros, the OFSAA junior record holder from La Salle, had the second-best time overall, 4:44.36.
Though she's a first-year senior, Jaros may have a surprise for the rest of the rest of the field Friday, since her qualifying time was almost 18 seconds slower than the time she posted last week in setting a new East region record.
Emily Drouin of Regi clocked a season-best time of 5 minutes 18.77 seconds in qualifying for Friday's final in open girls 1,500-metre steeplechase. Her time was the third fastest overall.
Also qualifying for Friday finals are Kingston Collegiate 1,500-metre runners Jacquelyn Quesnel and Cameron Linscott. Quesnel had the sixth-best time overall, a season-best 4 minutes 57.75 seconds in midget girls division while Linscott goes into the final with the seventh-best qualifying time in junior boys division, 4:12.12.
