Gloucester ends 39-game winless streak with victory over Kings

Gloucester Griffins spotted the Kingston Kings a four-goal lead Thursday night before coming back to take a 17-10 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League victory out of Centre 70.
The Griffins nursed a one-goal lead into the third period, then scored six unanswered goals to cap the win.
It was Gloucester's first win in 40 league and playoff games, dating to June 27, 2012, when the Griffins also defeated Kingston. It moved the Griffins into a tie with the Kings for third place in the four-team Far East division standings.
Kingston's loss was its fifth in a row, and extended the team's winless streak at home to 11 games.
The Kings came out of the gate flying. When Kaleb Bingley scored an unassisted goal at 6:49 of the first period, it was Kingston's second goal in 23 seconds and it gave the home team a 4-0 lead.
Gloucester replaced starting goaltender Brandon Mackie with Ryan Ogden at that point, and not long after that he got run over by Kingston's Zach Masterson while playing a loose ball in the corner. Masterson was given a major penalty, the Griffins scored twice on that power play, and by the time five more minutes were played Kingston's lead was gone.
The Kings scored goals 26 seconds apart to regain a two-goal lead, but three straight goals sent Gloucester into the second period with a 7-6 lead. The Kings briefly tied the game, but Gloucester took leads of 10-7 and 11-8 in the second period before two late goals brought Kingston back to 11-10 going into the third.
Kingston never threatened, however, and was outshot 19-13 in the final 20 minutes, 64-46 overall.
Masterson finished the game with three goals and four assists, while Bingley and Josh Smith each had two goals and three assists. Logan Rose, Michael Latour and rookie Liam Brick, with his first junior goal, also scored for Kingston, which reached the midpoint of the season 1-6-1.
Ryan Lafranchise had a career-best six-goal game, and added a pair of assists to lead Gloucester, 1-10-1. Curtis Smith and Josh O'Connell each had three goals and three assists while David Plots had two goals and three assists for the Griffins. Zack O'Gorman, Will Monkhouse and Kyle Newman shared the other goals for Gloucester, which was 7-for-8 on the power play.
Smith, with 12 goals and 25 points this year, has nine of those goals and 16 of those points against Kingston.
The third period remains unkind to the Kings, who have been outscored in the final 20 minutes six times in eight games. Thursday's game was the second time Kingston has been blanked in a third period this year, and in the last three games the Kings have been outscored in the final period 16-3.
The Griffins have scored 40 goals in three games against Kingston this year, 48 goals in nine games against the rest of the league.
Kingston resumes play Friday night in Peterborough, against the Far East division-leading Lakers, before playing Sunday afternoon in Newmarket against the Innisfil Saints.
