Kings whipped in Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH - Kingston Kings surrendered 11 goals in the second period Friday and they went on to drop a 23-6 decision to the Peterborough Lakers in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game at Kinsmen Civic Centre.
For the second game in a row, the Kings wasted a strong start. This time, they scored the first two goals of the game and, playing methodically, they led the Far East division leaders 3-1 midway through the first period. The game was tied 3-3 until the period's final minute, when Peterborough scored goals 22 seconds apart to take a 5-3 lead.
The teams traded goals in the first 80 seconds of the second period. Kingston killed a penalty at that point but shortly after it was over the Lakers went on a spree, scoring six times in the next six and a half minutes to chase starting goaltender Nic McFarlane.
His replacement, Isaac Sharrow, didn't fare much better but by then it was a shooting gallery. Capitalizing on turnovers and claiming almost every loose ball, the Lakers took 31 shots on the Kingston goal in the period and scored four more goals. Still, apparently it wasn't enough.
After a goal at 19:20 of the period put the home team up 16-4, the Kings turned the ball over with about 33 seconds left on the clock. Peterborough called timeout and pulled its goaltender in an unsuccessful bid to score that ever-important 17th goal before time expired.
Kingston scored the first goal of the third period and though Peterborough pulled in the reins on its top shooters, the Lakers' lesser lights continued to pour it on, with three goals in the first six minutes of the period and four more in the last six.
In all, 13 different players scored for Peterborough, led by Cam Crowe, who scored four goals, and Cole McWilliams, who had three goals and five assists. Chris Clancy also scored three times for the Lakers, while Adam Churchill had a goal and four assists. Goaltender Mitch Martin had four assists in the two periods he played.
Josh Smith scored four goals for Kingston, giving him 20 in just five games this year. Logan Rose and Stu Johnston scored once each, with Rose and Jonah Lewis each drawing two assists.
Peterborough outshot the Kings 68-24, as Kingston narrowly avoided the indignity of allowing an opponent to score more goals than the Kings could muster shots for the second time this year.
Peterborough, 9-2, increased its division lead to four points over the idle Cornwall Celtics. By losing its sixth straight game, the Kings fell to 1-7-1 and remain tied with Gloucester for third place in the four-team division.
The 23 goals was the most allowed by a Kingston team since the Cavaliers were defeated 29-5 by Peterborough on June 28, 2010. Not since that year had Kingston suffered defeat by as many as 16 goals.
The Kings resume play Sunday afternoon, when they will play the Innisfil Saints in Newmarket.
