Kings run out of comebacks in 12-8 loss to Innisfil

NEWMARKET - Kingston Kings gave a more spirited effort Sunday afternoon but they couldn't avoid a 12-8 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League defeat at the hands of the Innisfil Saints.
The Kings fell behind 3-0 in the first period but they battled back, tying the game 3-3 in the first minute of the second period. Three times Innisfil regained a one-goal lead in the period, only to have Kingston come back to tie as the teams entered the third period deadlocked 6-6.
The Kings were doomed by a 41-second lapse in the period's seventh minute, when Innisfil scored on a power play and then twice more before Kingston could catch its breath. It was 10-6 when the visitors scored twice to cut the deficit in half. With four minutes to go the Kings went on a power play but two turnovers in the offensive zone gave the Saints two possessions that allowed them to kill the penalty.
Two goals in the final 90 seconds sealed the victory.
Bryce Drew had a career-best junior game for the Kings, with three goals and two assists. Playing against his former team, Josh Smith had a goal and three assists. Nolan MacInnis, Austin Maracle, Liam Brick and Jonah Lewis shared the other Kingston goals, while Stu Johnston collected three assists.
For Smith it was a productive weekend. In Kingston's three games he scored seven goals - giving him 22 in six games this year - and he drew an assist on six of the team's other 17 goals.
Innisfil got five goals from its leading scorer, Jordan Nanos, giving him 35 for the season, second in the league only to Josh Miller (38) of Six Nations. With 56 points, he's been involved in more than half of his team's 96 goals to date. Logan Flewwelling scored three times for the Saints, while Jamie Smrke and Mack Degeau each scored twice.
Nic McFarlane sparkled in the Kingston goal in the first period, when he faced 23 shots. Overall, Innisfil outshot the Kings 49-31.
Already playing without leading scorer Zach Masterson, who has an injured shoulder, and Kaleb Bingley, who was ill, the Kings faced an injury epidemic early in the second period when Austin Maracle, Chavis Maracle and J.P. DiFilippo all went out of the game in a span of about five minutes. Austin Maracle, who dislocated a thumb, eventually returned but neither Chavis Maracle nor DiFilippo, who both suffered shoulder injuries, did.
It's feared that DiFilippo, the team's third-leading scorer, separated his shoulder and may be out for the remainder of the season.
The loss was the seventh in a row for the Kings, 1-8-1, while Innisfil improved to 4-6-1. After losing their first four games of the year, the Saints have lost just twice in their last seven.
The Kings will resume play Thursday night, when they will host the Far East division-leading Peterborough Lakers at Centre 70. Game time will be 8 o'clock.
