Depleted Kings fall to Peterborough

Cole McWilliams, the leading scorer in the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League, collected a career-best 11 points Thursday night at Centre 70 to lead the Peterborough Lakers to a 20-7 win over the Kingston Kings.
The win was the sixth in a row for the Far East division-leading Lakers, who improved to 11-2. The Kings, meanwhile, lost their eighth straight, and fell to 1-9-1 going into a game in Clarington Friday night against the Mid East division-leading Shamrox.
Peterborough, 23-6 winner over Kingston last Friday, jumped into a 7-0 lead Thursday before the game was 11 minutes old. McWilliams drew assists on five straight goals, and he finished the game with two goals and nine assists, giving him 27 goals and a league-best 53 assists. His 80 points are 21 more than the league's No. 2 point-getter, Josh Miller of Six Nations.
Only four players in the entire league have more points than McWilliams has assists. In four career games against Kingston, McWilliams has 10 goals and 31 points.
Mike Cavanagh, a player who never had more than seven points in a game in his two-year career, also enjoyed an 11-point night for the Lakers, scoring four times. Riley Venton, with three, Colton Armstrong, Adam Churchill and Chris Clancy, with two goals apiece, Jake Venton, Riley Campbell, Cam Crowe, Jake Mitchell and Luke Grills also scored for Peterborough against a youthful Kingston lineup that included just three fourth-year players.
Of the 19 Kings dressed Thursday, seven were rookies and seven others were second-year players. Two Kings, Hunter Drew and goaltender Foster Beaton, made their junior debuts. Drew had an assist while Beaton played the third period, allowing six goals on 17 Peterborough shots.
All of the Kingston goals, two each by Kaleb Bingley and Stu Johnston and one apiece from Jonah Lewis, Liam Brick and Nolan MacInnis, came from first- or second-year players. Johnston, a first-year junior, added two assists and Bryce Drew, a second-year King, collected four assists.
For Johnston it was a career-best game. Drew has 18 points in seven games since being assigned to his hometown club by the junior B Nepean Knights.
The Kings, now winless in their last 12 home games dating to May, 2013, played without their top three point-getters - Zach Masterson, Josh Smith and J.P. DiFilippo - and three of their top five goal-scorers - Smith, Masterson and Austin Maracle. Smith was working while Masterson, DiFilippo and Maracle are injured, the latter two through for the season.
Of the 86 goals Kingston scored in its first 10 games, the scorers of only 31 were present Thursday night.
The Lakers led 8-1 after the first period but they narrowly outscored the Kings 6-5 in the second. The visitors scored six times in the final 20 minutes, and they outshot the Kings 50-35.
