Owen Klassen helps Acadia into CIS basketball semifinals

Posted: March 8th, 2013 @ 10:31pm

Kingston's Owen Klassen scored 15 points Friday night to help the Acadia Axemen to an 89-80 win over the British Columbia Thunderbirds in the opening round of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's basketball championship tournament in Ottawa.

Klassen, a Bayridge Secondary School grad in his fourth year of kinesiology study at Acadia, Thursday night was named to the all-Canadian team. He averaged 16.3 points per game during the regular year and was second in the Atlantic conference - third in Canada - with 10.8 rebounds per game.

The Atlantic University Sport defensive player of the year each of the last two seasons and Acadia's team captain for the last three, Klassen helped Canada win a silver medal at the 2011 World Student Games in China and that fall also competed at the Pan American Games in Mexico. He was a second-team all-Canadian in 2012.

Acadia will play in Saturday's second semifinal, against the top-seeded Carleton Ravens, at 8:15 at Scotiabank Place. Carleton last night whipped Victoria 83-46, giving Ontario three of the four semifinalists.

Earlier, Lakehead defeated Cape Breton 74-61 while Ottawa trimmed McGill 82-70.
