Napanee wins both games on first day of Western Canada midget fastball tournament

Napanee Express won both of its games handily Friday at the Western Canada under-18 Fastball Championship in the the Battlefords, Sask.
Napanee, the lone team east of Manitoba in the seven-team tournament, defeated the No. 1 British Columbia team, the Fraser Valley Vipers, 16-0 in a game that lasted just four innings. Kyle Ainslie threw a one-hitter and Napanee got at least one run from each of its batting positions.
The Express immediately went back on the field and the momentum was clearly still there. In a game that was also shortened by the mercy rule, the Express prevailed over the No. 1 Saskatchewan team, Pipestone Valley, 9-1. Alex Douglas got the pitching win, striking out eight in just five innings, and Brandon Tucker had three hits and drove in five of Napanee's runs.
Saturday morning, Napanee will play the No. 2 Saskatchewan team, the Conquest Coyotes, before a late afternoon game with the No. 1 Alberta team, the Calahoo Chiefs.
Round-robin play concludes Sunday. The top four teams will advance into a playoff round Sunday night leading to a Monday afternoon championship game.
