Frontenacs 50th

Posted: March 9th, 2013 @ 9:47am

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Saturday, March 9, 1963

With a little more than a minute to play in the game, a goal by Alain (Boom Boom) Caron - his second of the game and the 47th of the season - gave St. Louis a 4-3 upset of the league-leading Frontenacs at the Community Centre.

The Braves led 3-0 at one point, thanks largely to goaltender Roger Crozier, who made 31 saves in the first two periods. Crozier gave one away early in the third, however, when, while attempting to clear the rebound of a Ken Stephanson shot off the end boards, the goalie instead dragged the puck into his own net.

Pete Panagabko had scored two minutes before that and the visitors' lead vanished completely when Don Blackburn scored at 9:56 of the third period.

The defeat left the Frontenacs two points ahead of idle Hull-Ottawa but the Canadiens have played two fewer games than Kingston going into tomorrow's play, when the Canadiens will host St. Louis and the Frontenacs travel to Sudbury.
