Women's soccer team solidifies spot in third; Queen's men move into second place

Queen's Golden Gaels made strides toward finishing third-and hosting a first-round playoff game-with a pair of Ontario University Athletics women's soccer victories on the weekend in northern Ontario.
Sunday in North Bay, Jessie de Boer stretched her consecutive-game scoring streak to five games as the Gaels defeated the Nipissing Lakers 3-1. That followed a 2-0 win Saturday in Sudbury over the Laurentian Voyageurs.
Queen's, 7-2-3 and undefeated in its last six games, trails second-place Ontario Tech by five points but now enjoys a five-point cushion over Toronto and Carleton, who are tied for fourth place.
It took just three minutes for the Gaels to score Sunday, as Breanna Burton got her first goal of the season just three minutes into the match. De Boer and Rachel Radu also scored for Queen's in the first half, as the Gaels took a two-goal lead into the break.
The second half was scoreless, despite Queen's taking 14 shots at the Nipissing goal. Madison Tyrell made eight saves for the goaltending win.
Saturday in Sudbury, the Gaels failed to muster a shot on goal in the first half but de Boer opened scoring in the fourth minute of the second half. She got her second goal of the game in its 77th minute.
After missing the first three games of the season, and failing to score in her first four contests, de Boer, a midfielder from North Vancouver, has scored seven times in the last five games.
With a three-save performance, Tyrell gained her league-leading sixth shutout of the season.
The Gaels resume play Saturday at Miklas-McCarney Field against the Ryerson Rams.
Queen's men, meanwhile, occupy second place in the East division after they gained a 1-1 draw with Nipissing Sunday.
The Gaels, 7-2-4, are five points behind division-leading Ryerson and one point ahead of Carleton. Though unbeaten in its last five games, Queen's has just two wins in its last seven.
Chris Michael scored the only goal Sunday for the Gaels, who trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Saturday in Sudbury, four goals in the second half gave Queen's a 4-0 win over Laurentian. Jacob Schroeter scored twice, his fifth and sixth goals of the season, while Andrew Martin, a third-year Gael from Kingston (Frontenac), scored his first goal of the year and Patrick van Belleghem, a freshman engineering student from Kenora, scored the first goal of his intercollegiate career.
Maxfield Materne replaced Kingston's Taylor Reynolds in the Queen's goal late in the game as the Gaels goalkeepers combined for the five-save clean sheet.
The men resume play Saturday at home against No. 4-ranked Ryerson.
