Former Frontenac Warren Steele joins Queen's hockey team
Posted: October 6th, 2014 @ 5:52pm
Turns out Warren Steele will be plying his hockey fortunes in Kingston after all.
Steele, released last month by the Kingston Frontenacs, has joined the Queen's Golden Gaels for the coming Ontario University Athletics season.
"I am thrilled that everything has worked out," Gaels coach Brett Gibson said, in a release.
"Over the last two weeks he has gone through a lot."
After three full years and part of a fourth as a defenceman with the Frontenacs, Steele had been pencilled to be one of the Ontario Hockey League team's three overage players. He was released on Sept. 22, four days before the season opener, when the Vancouver Canucks unexpectedly sent Evan McEneny back to junior.
"The maturity and determination he has shown is - a welcome addition," Gibson said. "He stabilizes our back end and will provide us with a spark."
With the Gaels, Steele, a first-year arts student, will be joining former Frontenacs teammate Darcy Greenaway. He and fellow freshman Eric Ming, formerly of the Niagara IceDogs, are both from Williamstown, Ont., near Cornwall.
A member of Canada's bronze medal-winning team at the world under-18 championship in 2012, Steele had 79 points in 207 OHL games. He's expected to replace some of the offence the Gaels lost when Chris Van Laren, their leading scorer last year as a defenceman, graduated.
Queen's, 2-4 in preseason play, was outscored 23-4 in its last four exhibition games.
The Gaels will open their regular schedule Friday when they host the McGill Redmen, 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Centre. Related Articles:
