Queen's women bow to Toronto; 10th-ranked men upset Ryerson

Toronto Blues got a pair of goals from Nicki Parkes as they defeated the Queen's Golden Gaels 2-1 Sunday in an Ontario University Athletics women's soccer match at Miklas-McCarney Field.
The win allowed Toronto to move within a point of Queen's in the battle for third place in the East division standings, and the defeat prevented the Gaels from clinching third. The Gaels, who will play division-leading Ottawa Wednesday, remain eight points behind second-place Ontario Tech.
It took just nine minutes for Parkes to open the scoring, and she scored the game-winner in the 56th minute. With a goal Saturday in a 3-1 win over the Royal Military College Paladins, Parkes, a second-year midfielder, emerged from the weekend with four goals after beginning it with just one in her first 10 games.
In between, the Gaels got a goal from Tara Bartram, her fourth of the year, midway through the first half to send the teams into the break tied 1-1.
Sunday's game ended a seven-game undefeated streak for the Gaels, 8-3-3, and it was the first time in seven games that Jessie de Boer failed to score a goal. She'd extended her consecutive-game scoring streak to six games Saturday in a 4-0 win over the Ryerson Rams.
For de Boer, who scored her team's second goal in the game's 28th minute, it was the eighth goal of her streak.
Jackie Tessier, playing her first game after missing four with an injury, scored the first goal of the game after just eight minutes of play. Breanna Burton scored twice in the span of five minutes late in the second half to put the game away.
Madison Tyrell made seven saves to post her seventh shutout of the season. In 14 games, she's allowed just nine goals this year.
In men's play Sunday, the No. 10-ranked Gaels remained three points ahead of Toronto in the quest for second place as the teams battled to a scoreless draw. Maxfield Materne made seven saves in the Queen's goal, while Rab Bruce-Lockhart of Toronto denied five shots by the home team.
On Saturday, the Gaels upset No. 4-ranked Ryerson 2-1, overcoming a 1-0 first-half deficit to do so.
Queen's tied the game five minutes into the second half on a goal by Eric Koskins, who headed a cross from Henry Bloemen. Amid some serious pressure in the Ryerson end of the field, Kristian Zanette beat the Rams' offside trap for a goal in the game's 64th minute.
Materne made three saves for the goalkeeping victory.
Queen's, 8-2-5 and undefeated in its last seven games, are just four points behind division-leading Ryerson, though the Gaels have played two more games.
The Gaels will play the final game of their regular schedule Sunday afternoon at Miklas-McCarney Field against the Royal Military College Paladins.
