Regi bound for playoff round at OFSAA field hockey

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers have assured themselves a berth in the quarter-finals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations field hockey championship tournament in Burlington.
Regi won both of its games in preliminary play Thursday, 4-2 over North Hastings of Bancroft and 1-0 over Ottawa's Longfields-Davidson Heights. The Panthers, along with Waterloo Bluevale, are both 2-0 after the first day of the 16-team competition and both teams will advance out of their pool to the playoff round.
Regi, the tournament's No. 7 seed, and Bluevale, the No. 2 seed, will meet Friday morning in the final game of the preliminary round. Regardless of the outcome of that game, neither team can be caught by North Hastings or Longfields-Davidson Heights, who were both beaten twice on Thursday.
It took Regi's Lilly Dickson barely a minute to score the game's first goal against North Hastings and the Panthers, with excellent defensive play by Alina Freundorfer and goalkeeper Lize Freundorfer, never trailed.
Dickson and Christina Tavares each scored twice for Regi.
Mikaila Rostek set up the game's only goal, by Tavares, in the second victory over Longfields-Davidson Heights. Lize Freundorfer posted the shutout.
Regi has already surpassed its performance at last year's OFSAA tournament, where the Panthers were 0-2-1 and scored just one goal.
In the 35-year history of the competition, no team from eastern Ontario has won the championship.
Kitchener Resurrection is the tournament's top seed. Resurrection has won three of the last four OFSAA titles.
