Regi reaches playoff round at OFSAA boys volleyball

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers began play Friday night in the playoff round of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations boys AAA volleyball tournament.
The Panthers, the third-seeded team at the 20-team championship, were undefeated in four preliminary round matches. They will play Ottawa Lisgar, 3-1 in round-robin play and the tournament's No. 6 seed, in the upper gym at the Queen's University Athletics and Recreation Centre.
Regi won its final preliminary match Friday morning, 2-0 (25-18, 25-18) over Sir John A. Macdonald of Agincourt. It was Macdonald's only loss in pool play.
The Holy Cross Crusaders, the tournament's host team, reached the consolation quarter-finals despite narrow defeats in their final two round-robin matches Friday, 2-0 both to Maple (22-25, 26-28) and St. Paul of Mississauga (22-25, 24-26). Holy Cross ended the preliminary round 1-3.
The Loyalist Lancers, the third Kingston Area team in the tournament, finished its schedule 0-4. In a closely contested match with Aurora St. Andrew's, the Lancers bowed 2-1 (25-21, 26-28, 15-5); in its other Friday match, Loyalist was defeated 2-0 (16-25, 23-25) by Lisgar.
The handicappers did their job well, as the eight quarter-finalists included the tournament's seven top-seeded teams: No. 1 Chatham Kent, the two-time defending champion; No. 2 London Oakridge, Regi, No. 4 Maple, No. 5 Jacob Hespeler of Cambridge, Lisgar and No. 7 St. Thomas of Villanova of LaSalle. Macdonald, which began play as the ninth-seeded team, was the only interloper.

North Addington Vikings dropped their final two matches at the boys single-A volleyball tournament in Welland, both 2-0-25-13, 25-20 to Durham Christian of Bowmanville and 25-21, 25-18 to Noveau Regard Pavillon Jeunesse Nord of Cochrane. In four matches at the 20-team championship, the Vikings were unable to win a set.
