Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers captured the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations boys AAA volleyball championship Saturday, defeating London Oakridge 3-2 in a stirring gold-medal match at Holy Cross Secondary School.
The championship is Regi's third in the last six years; the Panthers' fourth in the last 13 years, but their first in four tournaments held in Kingston in the last nine years.
In a back-and-forth marathon, Regi dropped the first set 25-23 but won the second 25-27. After a 33-31 setback in the third set, the Panthers forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory.
In the decisive game, Regi, which began the tournament as the third-seeded team, prevailed 15-11.
The Panthers were undefeated in seven matches at the 20-team, three-day competition.
Jacob Hespeler of Cambridge won the bronze medal, 3-1 over Chatham-Kent, the two-time defending champion which was the tournament's No. 1 seed. Related Articles:
