Holy Cross set to begin play at OFSAA boys, girls hockey

Holy Cross Crusaders will have something to prove when they begin play this week at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations boys AAA/AAAA hockey championship tournament.
The Crusaders, representing eastern Ontario, are seeded 16th in the 16-team event that will be contested in Brampton and Mississauga. They are in a preliminary pool with Sacred Heart of Stittsville, Brother Andre of Markham and Holy Trinity of Bradford.
Holy Cross, which got an overtime goal from Brandon Verkerk for a 4-3 win over St. Joseph's of Cornwall to win the eastern Ontario berth in the tournament, opens Wednesday morning at 10:15 against No. 4 Holy Trinity. The Crusaders will conclude the day's play Wednesday at 5 p.m. against No. 9 Sacred Heart and play their final round-robin game Thursday at 8 a.m. against sixth-seeded Brother Andre, the 2011 OFSAA champion coached by former University of Toronto coach Paul Titanic.
The top two teams in each of the four-team pools will enter championship quarter-finals Thursday afternoon. The final is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday.
St. Peter's of Peterborough is the top-ranked team in the tournament. Other past champions in the field are Denis Morris of St. Catharines, which has won two of the last five provincial titles and is seeded fifth this year, defending champion Michael Power-St. Joseph of Toronto, St. Aloysius Gonzaga of Mississauga, the 2009 winner, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also of Mississauga, which won three championships, 2002-06.
* The Holy Cross girls begin play Tuesday as the No. 4 seed at their AAA/AAAA tournament in Orillia, Coldwater and Rama. They'll play St. Mary of Cobourg at 12:30 and then St. Aloysius Gonzaga at 5 o'clock. Wednesday morning the Crusaders will conclude pool play St. Maxmilian Kolbe of Aurora at 9:30.
Similarly, the Crusaders will be striving for a top-two finish in their pool and a berth in the championship quarter-finals Wednesday afternoon.
Last year Napanee represented eastern Ontario at the provincial tournament and, with a win, a loss and a tie in preliminary play, reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated.
