Frontenacs 50th

Posted: March 19th, 2013 @ 2:26pm

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Tuesday, March 19, 1963

Jean-Paul Parise scores two goals to lead Kingston to a 5-1 win at St. Louis.

"J.P. had his finest game in a Frontenacs uniform," assistant coach Harry Sinden told the Whig-Standard. Cliff Pennington moved one game close to Orv Tessier's consecutive-game point record, with a pair of assists.

Wayne Schultz, the emergency centre, also had two assists, on both of Parise's goals. Ron Willy, Billy Knibbs and Don Blackburn also scored for Kingston. Blackburn's goal was his 40th of the season. Alain (Boom Boom) Caron, the league's leading goal scorer, scored his 50th goal in just his 47th game for the Braves.

The loss eliminated St. Louis from playoff contention. The Braves are 11 points behind third-place Sudbury with just five games to play.

Kingston's win restored the Frontenacs' lead atop league standings to three points over the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens, who did not play tonight.

* With a goal and six assists last week, Murray Hall of St. Louis has assumed the league's scoring lead, according to official statistics released today. He now has 90 points, four more than Marc Dufour and Gord Labossiere of Sudbury and six more than Kingston's Blackburn and Jeannot Gilbert.
