Canada’s women’s field hockey team will play a quarter-final match Monday after defeating Mexico 4-0 Friday on the final day of the preliminary round at the XVII Pan American games in Toronto.

Canada broke open a scoreless game with three goals in the second quarter.

Kingston’s Kate Gillis, a Regiopolis Notre Dame grad, was in the lineup for Canada, which finished the round-robin portion of its schedule 2-1. The Canadians will face Uruguay, 1-2 after dropping a 3-0 decision Friday to Chile, Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the St. George field on the campus of the University of Toronto.

Elsewhere Friday:

• The Canadian men’s volleyball team defeated Mexico 3-0, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18. Former Queen’s Golden Gael Adam Simac had two kills and two blocks in the third set for Canada.

• Kingston’s Danielle Boyd, sailing with Erin Rafuse of Halifax, was sixth, fourth and fifth in the final three races in women’s 49er FX competition on Lake Ontario off Royal Canadian Yacht Club. The Canadian crew is sixth after 12 races, with 77 points, going into Saturday’s medal race. Argentina’s Victoria Travascio, who won one of Friday’s three races—her fifth in the series—has 28 points.

•  Queen’s University grad Terry McLaughlin remains second at the end of the preliminary round in open J-24 sailing competition, after finishing second and sixth in Friday’s final two races. Matias Pereira of Argentina leads the fleet with 21 points, 10 less than McLaughlin and his crew of Sandy Andrews, David Ogden and David Jarvis, all of Toronto. Though McLaughlin is allowed to discard the sixth-place finish—his worst at these Games—Chile’s Matias Seguel, who was first and second in Friday’s races, has closed to within three points of McLaughlin in third place.

• Evert McLaughlin, another Queen’s grad, was seventh and eighth Friday in his two races in open Snipe division. He and crew Alexandra Damley-Strnad of Mississauga are fifth in the 10-boat fleet, with 62 poins, 44 behind leader Raul Rios de Choudens of Puerto Rico. Rios de Choudens, who was first and second Friday, has won six of the last eight races in the 12-race series.

Medal races in both the J-24 and Snipe will be contested Sunday.

In what is known as the Olympic low-scoring system, competitors receive penalty points according to their finish—one for first, two for second, etc. In the medal races, double points will be awarded.
