Posted: March 20th, 2013 @ 4:15pm
A goal by Kristen O'Neill at 7:41 of overtime gave Oakville's St. Ignatius of Loyola a 3-2 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders in the quarter-final round of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls AAA/AAAA hockey tournament in Orillia.
The defeat eliminated the Crusaders from further competition.
Shelby Perry scored both Holy Cross goals, giving her seven for the tournament. She scored the only goal of the first period and her goal 71 seconds into the second period gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
They were the first two goals surrendered in the tournament by St. Ignatius, which won all three of its preliminary games by a combined score of 15-0.
The good fortune didn't last for Holy Cross, however. St. Ignatius cut the deficit to 2-1 going into the third period and Bridgette O'Neill scored at 7:40 of the final stanza to tie the game.
Holy Cross ended preliminary play Wednesday morning with a 2-1 record after a 7-0 win over St. Maximilian Kolbe of Aurora in a game where Perry scored the game's first three goals. After scoring the only goal of the first period she scored two goals nine seconds apart in the third minute of the second period to put her team in command. She later added an assist.
Caleigh Patterson-Mahoney, with two, Erin McAuley and Grace Pereira scored the other goals for Holy Cross, which dispatched Kolbe to the consolation round not just without a win but without a goal in three games.
St. Aloysius Gonzaga finished atop the preliminary pool undefeated, after beating St. Mary of Cobourg 7-1 Tuesday morning. Related Articles:
