A buzzer-beating three-point basket by Hailey Wolfgram at the end of the second overtime period gave the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers a 37-34 victory over the Sydenham Golden Eagles Thursday in a Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls basketball game.

It was a remarkable performance by the Golden Eagles, who came far closer than any of Regi’s previous four victims this year, who fell by 32, 23, 35 and 41 points.

Bridget Mulholland scored 14 points for the Panthers, while Wolfgram finished the game with eight.

Brittany Patterson had 12 points for Sydenham.

“We rushed a lot of shots but when it came down to the two overtimes, we were able to control our emotions, for the most part,” Regi coach Lesley Stevenson wrote, in an email.

The Eagles, 2-2, employed excellent use of the high screen and tenacious defensive play to keep the game close in a packed Sydenham gym.

“They should not be taken lightly by anyone in our league,” Stevenson wrote. “They are quick and full of energy.”

Elswehere, the La Salle Black Knights and Holy Cross Crusaders both stayed within sight of league-leading Regi, each winning for the fourth game in a row, 45-12 at Bayridge and 45-25 at Frontenac, respectively.

In Thursday’s other game, the Kingston Blues gained their first win of the year, 25-13 over the Ernestown Eagles at Odessa.
