Dragons reach EOSSAA single-A final

Posted: November 20th, 2015 @ 10:31pm

Marie-Rivier Dragons capped a successful season by reaching the final of the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior boys single-A volleyball tournament Thursday in Renfrew.

The Dragons, whose 6-5 season in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association included a 3-2 win over eventual semifinalist Holy Cross, still hadn’t impressed the tournament organizers in Renfrew, where Marie-Rivier was seeded sixth among the six competing teams.

By the end of the tournament, though, the Dragons—winless as recently as a year ago—had indeed opened some eyes.

They were unbeaten through the preliminary round robin, defeating the host team from St. Joseph’s and Gananoque. That put them into the semifinals against L’Heritage of Cornwall, where again the Dragons prevailed.

In the final, Marie-Rivier was defeated in straight sets by Le Sommet of Hawkesbury.

With that win, Le Sommet advances to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations single-A championship tournament next week in Toronto.
