Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

Posted: March 30th, 2013 @ 11:58am

Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.

Tuesday, March 30, 1976

Four power-play goals carry the Ottawa 67's to a 6-3 win at the Civic Centre, handing the Canadians a loss that leaves them just one point away from elimination. Ottawa builds a 5-1 lead before the midway point of the second period en route to taking a 7-3 lead in the eight-point quarter-final series.

So delighted was Ottawa coach Brian Kilrea with the win, the first by a team on home ice all series, he was reported to have forgotten to light his customary post-game cigar.

Doug Wilson scored twice for Ottawa and set up the other two power-play goals, by Peter Lee and U.S. Olympic team star Bob Miller. Jim Roberts and Tim Higgins scored the other Ottawa goals. Tony McKegney scored twice for Kingston, both, the Whig-Standard reported, on dandy setups by Mike Crombeen. Barry Scully scored the other goal for the Canadians, who got their last two goals in the final three minutes of the game.
