Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.

Any thoughts the Toronto Marlboros had of breezing through their first-round playoff series with the Kingston Canadians are rudely dispelled, as the Canadians score three third-period goals to claim a 9-7 win. The victory, before a crowd of 4,301 at the Memorial Centre, enables the Canadians to tie the best-of-seven quarter-final 2-2.
The Marlies were runaway regular-season champions, while the Canadians squeaked into eighth place on the final day of the regular schedule.
"For a team that was supposed to roll over and die at the mere thought of the Marlboros we're not doing too badly, are we?" Canadians general manager-coach Walter (Punch) Scherer told Art Wright of the Whig-Standard.
The Canadians led 5-2 early in the second period before the Marlboros stormed back to tie the game 6-6 going into the third. Alex Forsyth, who was unable to finish the previous two games due to a sore knee, scored two of the third-period goals and finished the night with three altogether.
Barry Scully had two goals and an assist for Kingston, while Rob Plumb, Dave Hynek, Tony McKegney and Brad Rhiness scored the others. Mark Napier had two goals and two assists for Toronto, which got its other goals from Bruce Boudreau, Lynn Jorgenson, Ron Harris, Ron Wilson and Mike Kaszycki.
