Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Tuesday, April 2, 1963
The semifinal series between the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens and Sudbury Wolves, which opens tomorrow night, could easily become a goaltenders duel between Gerry Cheevers of the Wolves and Cesare Maniago of the Canadiens.
Cheevers, the blond netminder regarded as heir to Toronto Maple Leafs' Johnny Bower, has been a thorn in the Canadiens' sides all season, the Ottawa Citizen writes. Maniago, the 24-year-old Trail, B.C., native who shifted between Montreal and the Quebec Aces of the American league before landing in Hull-Ottawa, has the best goals-against average in the league, 3.07.
Canadiens will have one new face in their lineup, Brian Watson, an all-star defenceman from Peterborough in the OHA. Jacques Laperriere, one of four regular Habs up with the parent Montreal Canadiens, is the only one eligible to rejoin the team should Montreal lose to Toronto in the NHL playoffs, since he was recalled as an emergency replacement. The other three - Terry Harper, Red Berenson and Bill McCreary - will have to wait 14 days from the time Montreal is eliminated before they can get back into action.
