Frontenacs 50th
 Posted: April 3rd, 2013 @ 5:35pm
Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Wednesday, April 3, 1963
An overtime goal by Len Ronson gives the Sudbury Wolves a 3-2 win over the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens in the opening game of their best-of-five EPHL semifinal. "With general manager Sammy Pollock sitting in Section 16, front row centre, (coach Frank) Mario tried his best to whip the Canadiens into winning form (but) he couldn't match horses with the determined northern club," Ron Covell wrote in the Ottawa Citizen.
Sudbury goalie Gerry Cheevers faces 38 shots, while Cesare Maniago, guarding the Canadiens goal, sees only 20. After Keith McCreary opened scoring with the only goal of the first period, Sudbury's Ronson and Paul Andrea scored twice in a span of four minutes late in the second period. Bob Ellett sent the game into overtime with a goal in the ninth minute of the third period.
The second game of the series will be Friday night in Sudbury. The Canadiens will leave by train tomorrow night at 11 o'clock for the return engagement.
