Frontenacs 50th

Posted: April 4th, 2013 @ 6:05pm

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Thursday, April 4, 1963

Hull-Ottawa Canadiens celebrate the return of Jacques Laperriere, who will be in the lineup tomorrow night when they play Game 2 of the best-of-five semifinal series in Sudbury. Laperriere had been an emergency replacement with the parent Montreal Canadiens, who were eliminated last night by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of NHL playoffs.

The team announces that juniors Yvon Cormier and Andre Boudrias, who have both seen action with Hull-Ottawa during the regular schedule, are slated as the next players to be called by the Canadiens. They are not eligible to dress, however, until the Canadiens' next home game, since junior players are prohibited from playing with another team for seven days after their junior club is eliminated. Brian Harper and Gary Peters, meanwhile, have both been sent back to Regina, since they have played the maximum five games allowed. To play any more Montreal would have to turn them pro, thus forfeiting their last season of junior hockey.

Hull-Ottawa coach Frank Mario tells the Ottawa Citizen that the line of John Rodger, Bob Ellett and Claude Larose would again be given the assignment of tackling the Wolves' top line of Gord Labossiere, Marc Dufour and Len Ronson. Labossiere was the league scoring champion, Dufour finished was fourth and Ronson proved to be the thorn in Canadiens' side in the series opener, with two goals, including the overtime winner.
