Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Sunday, April 7, 1963
With the Eastern Professional Hockey League championship series about to start Wednesday in Kingston, Wren Blair sounds an ominous note. Win or lose, the Frontenacs manager-coach says he will be sitting down with team officials in Boston to decide whether the team remains in Kingston or moves to the U.S.
"There has to be another Canadian city in the league if we are to remain here," Blair writes in an as-told-to piece by Allan Dickie of the Whig-Standard. "If there wasn't, we wouldn't be accepted, and we have to consider whether we can regain the support of Kingston's hockey public after the crowds dropped off this season.
"I would never again want to operate a team in Kingston or anywhere else with only a four-team league. I still have a high regard for Kingston as a hockey community and feel that the four-team league was the main reason for the drop in attendance.
"I personally would like to see the team remain here, but my recommendation must be generated by common sense and in the final analysis, the decision, regardless of my recommendation, will be made by Boston's board of directors."
