Kingston's Max Caron bound for East-West Bowl

Posted: April 7th, 2013 @ 10:10pm

Kingston's Max Caron is among the players who have been invited to play in the 11th annual East-West Bowl football game next month in London.

Caron's name was inadvertently omitted from a posting earlier this week (my apologies to his family and friends).

A linebacker at Concordia in the Quebec conference, Caron attended Frontenac Secondary School and went to the Stingers after playing junior football in B.C. In 2011, he had one of the all-time great seasons by a defensive player in the CIS when, in just his second year, he won the Presidents Trophy as defensive player of the year after leading the nation in total tackles (78.5) and solo tackles (67) and led his conference in interceptions (five; three returned for touchdowns) and forced fumbles (three).

His total tackles established a school record, breaking the record of 62 set by Cory Greenwood when he won the Presidents Trophy in 2009. Greenwood, also from Kingston, has played the last two years in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Oddly, though Caron was second in Canada in tackles in 2012 (60) and tied for fifth in solo tackles (45), he was not selected to the Quebec conference all-star team.

"Max has tremendous functional intelligence for his position," Concordia coach Gerry McGrath has said. "He's so good at anticipating what is going to happen, sometimes you'd swear he was in the offensive huddle.

"His work ethic is exceptional. He watches more film than anyone. He knows what everyone else's job is, not just his own."

The East-West Bowl is a showcase for university players going into their Canadian Football League draft year. Players on the East team come from teams in the Atlantic and Quebec conferences, as well as Queen's, Ottawa and Toronto in Ontario. The West team comprises players from the rest of Ontario and the Canada West conference.

Quarterback Billy McPhee, defensive back Andrew Lue, defensive lineman Derek Wiggan and linebacker Sam Sabourin will represent the Queen's Golden Gaels on the East team. McMaster quarterback Marshall Ferguson, a Frontenac grad, will play for the West.
