Frontenacs 50th

Posted: April 14th, 2013 @ 10:46am

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season.

Fifty years ago today, Sunday, April 14, 1963

As the teams enjoy an off day prior to Game 3 of the EPHL final Monday night in Sudbury, Frontenacs general manager Wren Blair reflected on Kingston's 5-3 win Saturday, an outcome that wasn't secured until Pat Stapleton scored the go-ahead goal with just 25 seconds left in the third period.

Untill that point, Blair was not enjoying the game as he watched it from the Memorial Centre press box: He shouted, screamed and pounded the front of the press box so vigorously that his arm turned black and blue, Doug McConnell wrote in the Whig-Standard.

"Fans in the Sudbury area complained they couldn't hear the hockey broadcast, since Blair was drowning out the announcer."

McConnell wrote that press box inhabitants were certain at least half a dozen times the Kingston manager-coach was going to jump right out of the box.

"No," Blair said later, "but I almost fell out twice."
