Kings sign three players for coming lacrosse season

Posted: April 19th, 2013 @ 10:55am

Kingston Kings have announced the signing of three veteran players for the 2013 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season - four-year man Dan Smith and two players entering their third year with the team, Haneh Brant and Logan Rose.

Smith, 20, a charter member of the Kingston team that returned to junior C competition in 2009, is a graduate of Napanee District Secondary School who grew up in Newburgh. A member of Kingston's Ontario midget D championship team in 2007, he's the junior team's all-time leader among active players with 50 games played and 113 penalty minutes.

"He's really proven himself," Kings coach Mike Dube said. "He has that air of a leader and being one of the most senior guys on the team, we're going to put a lot of weight onto his shoulders in terms of on-floor discipline and leadership."

Brant, 18, from Tyendinaga, has 17 goals and 26 points in 24 games with the Kingston junior club over three seasons.

"Haneh is a guy who in the past has been a little bit under-rated in terms of his skills," Dube said. "We look at him and see a guy who's unbelievably talented and has a really good nose for the net. He's a guy we really expect to lead our offence this year."

Rose, 18, attends Sydenham High School. He had 16 points in 14 games in 2012, including a career-best three-goal, five-point performance July 5 vs. Gloucester.

"He's a big strong guy," Dube said. "We plan on having him and Danny run our defence, anchor that, have the system down and really be relied on, game in and game out, as one of our main players on the defensive end of the floor."

The Kings resume pre-season camp Wednesday and Thursday at Centre 70. They will play a home-and-home exhibition series with the Gloucester Griffins April 26-27 and open their regular schedule Thursday, May 9 against the same Gloucester club.
