Kings set to open exhibition schedule
Posted: April 26th, 2013 @ 10:20pm
As they prepare for their first game competition of the season, the Kingston Kings announce the signing of two more players, veteran Jay Waller and newcomer Josh Smith, for the 2013 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season.
Waller, 20, a product of the Kingston Lacrosse Association minor system, is beginning his third season with the Kings. He led the team with 23 assists in 2013. One of the premier penalty killers and faceoff men in the league, he's averaged better than a point and a half per game over the past two seasons.
"He's a veteran who we're looking to for leadership, at both ends of the floor," coach Mike Dube said, "mostly in terms of working really hard but we're going to put some of the workload of the offence (on him) as well."
Smith comes to the Kings after a season where he played 30 junior games, split between the junior C Innisfil Wolfpack and the junior B Newmarket Saints. With Innisfil he tied for the team lead with 13 goals and he was second on the team with 23 points in 14 games. An engineering student at Queen's University, he plays on the varsity field lacrosse team there.
"His skill set is through the roof," Dube said. "He's a kid we're going to use offensively, where certainly he brings our team's skill level up a lot."
The signings bring to nine the number of players carded to the Kings as they enter their home-and-home exhibition series this weekend with the Gloucester Griffins. Kingston will play in Ottawa Saturday afternoon before returning home for a 4 p.m. game Sunday at Centre 70.
Admission to Sunday's game will be free, though the Kings will be accepting donations of food or money for the Partners in Mission Food Bank.
These will be the only games for the Kings before they open their regular schedule Thursday, May 9, at home vs. Gloucester. Related Articles:
