Former Bayridge player chosen in first round of CFL draft

Former Bayridge Secondary School player Hunter Steward was selected Monday in the first round of the Canadian Football League draft, chosen sixth overall by the British Columbia Lions.
Steward moved to Virginia Beach, Va., before his final year of high school and he subsequently enrolled at the University of Virgina. He transferred to Liberty University in 2011 and, because of the year he had to sit out for the transfer, he, still has a year of intercollegiate eligibility remaining.
He's projected to be the starting left tackle at Liberty this fall.
No one from the Queen's Golden Gaels was selected in Monday's annual draft. In fact, save for three players from the McMaster Marauders, Ontario University Athletics was shutout through most of the first four rounds.
The highest-ranking pick from an OUA team was offensive lineman Matt Sewell, selected eighth overall by the Toronto Argonauts. Sewell, however, already has signed with the Tennessee Titans of the National Footballl League.
McMaster defensive lineman Ben D'Aguilar followed in the second round and wide receiver Michael DiCroce was chosen early in the fourth.
Three of the first five players chosen in the draft are from the Calgary Dinosaurs, including top overall pick Linden Gaydosh, a defensive lineman selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Last year Queen's had one player drafted, wide receiver Giovanni Aprile, who was taken in the third round by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Fifteen players from the OUA were among the 68 chosen through seven rounds of Monday's draft. Five are from McMaster, two each from Ottawa, Wilfrid Laurier, Guelph and Western and one each from Windsor and Waterloo.
