Queen's to host international volleyball match

Posted: May 6th, 2013 @ 5:00pm

Kingston will be the site of an exhibition international men's volleyball match Saturday, May 18, in the main gym of the Queen's University Athletics and Recreation Centre.

Canada's national team will play Turkey in a match that will commence at 4 p.m. It's the final fixture of a three-match series in advance of a World League tournament in Quebec City that begins May 31.

Established in 1990, the World League is an annual tournament for men's national teams. Canada, ranked 18th in the world, returned to the league last year for the first time in five years, and finished 12th. The highlight for the Canadians was a victory over No.1-ranked Brazil.

Though ranked No.48 in the world, Turkey has special significance for the Canadian team. Coach Glenn Hoag was coach of the Arkas club of Izmir, which won the championship of the Turkish professional league this year. Three of his players, Gord Perrin, Justin Duff and former Queen's Golden Gael Adam Simac, were members of that team.

Simac, who has been a national-team starter for two seasons, has been selected again to play in the World League this summer.
