Poor second period dooms Kings to first defeat
 Posted: May 11th, 2013 @ 3:46am
PETERBOROUGH - For the second game in a row, the Kingston Kings played a dreadful second period. This time, however, there was no heroic comeback in the third, as the Peterborough Lakers opened their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season with a 10-2 over the visiting Kings Friday night.
The defeat evened the Kings' record at 1-1.
Kingston's Zach Masterson opened scoring in the game's fourth minute and the game was tied 1-1 until Peterborough struck for two goals in the final five minutes of the first period. The score was 4-1 in favour of the Lakers when the Kings took a high-sticking penalty at 12:43 of the second period. Peterborough scored 30 seconds into the power play and that ignited the stretch that doomed the Kings.
Nick Andreoli's goal started the Lakers on a spree of scoring on three consecutive shots in a span of just 49 seconds to take the score to 7-1. Peterborough added another goal before the period ended and, unlike their season opener Thursday night - when they scored six times in the third period to overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat Gloucester - the Kings never challenged after that.
Josh Smith scored Kingston's other goal, a shorthanded effort, five and a half minutes into the third period.
Michael Cavanaugh, Andreoli and Cole McWilliams each scored twice for Peterborough. Andreoli and Cavanaugh each added two assists.
Peterborough outshot Kingston 42-33.
The Kings resume play Wednesday, when they visit the two-time defending league champion Clarington Shamrox. Kingston returns home to host the Whitby Warriors Thursday, 8 p.m., at Centre 70. Related Articles:
