Max Caron leads East team in tackles

LONDON - Being part of the East-West Bowl football game was a terrific experience, Max Caron said, once his luggage caught up with him.
"I didn't have a lot of my things for the first couple of days," said Caron, the Frontenac Secondary School grad now playing with the Concordia Stingers.
"I was out in a Western helmet," he grinned. "I don't know if my coach would be too happy about that. It wasn't fun but I got over it. You're here and you're happy, so you just adjust.
Caron nicely got over the logistical misadventure that led to his bags arriving on a train two days after he did. Playing for the East, he led all defensive players in the game with 6.5 tackles.
The West, with a field goal by McMaster's Tyler Crapigna with 66 seconds remaining, won the 11th annual game 18-17.
Indeed, Caron said, adaptability is one of the most important traits a player can bring to an event that assembles the best seniors from across Canada for a week of practice and a showcase game.
"It was a cool experience to meet a lot of the guys from the east and see how different programs work," he said. "It means you have to be ready for change, ready to adapt and to adjust to different systems and different things that coaches here are going to want you to play.
"I just tried to learn on the fly and do the best I can. At the end of it, if you gave 100 per cent then you can be happy with the result."
At Concordia, the 2011 winner of the Presidents Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in Canada typically plays the Will (weak side) linebacker but Caron played mostly Mac (middle) linebacker Saturday.
"There's a couple of different looks, playing against some guys I've never played against - but good athletes will adjust on the fly. It was fun to learn and being asked to do different things gets you out of your comfort zone and makes you a better player at the end of the day."
Caron described the week as a "surreal experience."
"It was really cool to meet a lot of guys and meet up with a lot of Queen's guys, coach Pat Tracey, touch base with the way I started my football career, going to Queen's camps and learning from some of the players in that program."
