KASSAA athletes among winners on first day of East regional track meet

Thirteen Kingston-area athletes punched their ticket to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships with performances Thursday on the first day of the East regional qualifying meet in Belleville.
Finals were held in 18 events on the track and eight field events. Competition in all other events will be held Friday at the Mary Ann Sills athletic complex.
Athletes from the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association owned the female divisions of the 1,500 metres, winning all three.
Nicole Armstrong of Sydenham won the senior race in 4 minutes 39.18 seconds, an improvement of more than seven seconds on the time she clocked to win the same event at the eastern Ontario championship last week.
Heather Jaros of La Salle, who hadn't been seriously challenged all season - she won at EOSSA last week by more than 34 seconds - responded well to a challenge, dropping her time from a week ago by two seconds to defeat Claire Smith of Ottawa Glebe by 2.7 seconds. They were more than 14 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Branna MacDougall continued her undefeated season for Regiopolis Notre Dame, winning the midget race in 4 minutes 44.52 seconds, a four-second improvement on her EOSSA-record time of a week ago.
For male distance runners representing KASSAA schools, the 1,500 metres provided a touch of disappointment.
Though he improved his time by four seconds, Kingston's Cameron Linscott saw his season-long winning streak in midget division end. He still qualified for OFSAA by finishing third, in 4 minutes 18.89 seconds, a second and a half off the winning pace of Owen Day of Kanata Holy Trinity.
Jonathan Besselink of Holy Cross had perhaps the most difficult experience. Though he posted a personal-best time - 4:11.35 - he finished fifth in the junior boys race, and failed to qualify for OFSAA by one one-hundredth of a second.
Three other KASSAA athletes won their events Thursday:
* Drew Marquette of Queen Elizabeth won midget boys shot put, with a best attempt of 13.64 metres, a personal best;
* Sydenham's Wade Embury won senior boys 200 metres in a season-best 21.42 seconds;
* Jay Dearborn of Sydenham won senior boys javelin with a throw of 53.77 metres, 1.76 metres beyond the rest of the field and a season best by almost three metres.
The East regional meet draws the top athletes from the Central Ontario, Eastern Ontaro and National Capital associations, comprising an area roughly from Peterborough and Port Hope to the Quebec border. It's one of five such meets being held to qualify athletes for the OFSAA meet, next Thursday through Saturday in Oshawa. To advance, competitors must finish in the top four of their event.
